    Great Glen Challenge 2025
Words: David PartridgePhotos: David Partridge, Derek Rendall & Gareth AingeThis year was a very memorable one for the Great Glen Challenge. The 92 km race offers paddlers a non-stop or a two-day challenge. This year also introduced a new Team option.Ultra paddling is addictive, and I have written on this before https://paddlerezine.com/long-distance-sup/, so lets stick to 2025.In the week leading up to the event, Scotland saw quite a lot of wind, but as Emma Hepplewhite, the Race Director, says, In Scotland you have to take the forecast with a pinch of salt, and if it isnt what you want, wait 15 minutes and it will change.Add whisky to the salt At the start of day two, the competitors lined up to toast Nessie with whisky, Ness Gin or Irun Bru! The toast paid off as Duncan (Emmas Husband) made a courageous decision to switch race direction halfway through, which came good. This huge call was semi-anticipated but threw a whole new layer of complexity into logistics and event planning. What it did give was a somewhat smoother second day on the water.A few new names have been added to the list of paddlers taking on the challenge, bringing national and international panache and style to the event. Emma noted how, this year, the paddle community had really come together to support each other. A US paddler lost her luggage in transit but was soon furnished with a wetsuit, leash, hydration bags, PFD and rash vests. The cohesive competitors in the WhatsApp group swung into collective action. Others broke down en route. One managed a puncture on the way to the day two start and was rescued at 05:00, then transported to the start. Getting to the start line of this race is for many the hardest challenge. Deciding to do it, running through the comprehensive briefing and resources on route, logistics, timing and a step by (many) step guide to the portages. There are so many stories and highlights that the final dinner became a celebration for everyone who had participated, a chance to thank the excellent support crew and volunteers who made the event possible. The room rose to a standing ovation to thank Emma and Duncan, who admitted the only reason they continue the race is the warmth, gratitude and buzz that it creates for every competitor.Every challenger is a winner. So the standouts and results:Non stoppers:Tanya Ecker had travelled from the Black Forest in Germany with her mum Moya and friend Marliese Mendel (who competed in the two day). This was my first time at the Great Glen, it has been on my list for five years or more but has clashed with 11 Cities (which she has seven finishers medals for including a non stop and first places). I decided as its a long journey to travel to Skye and the West coast and see some of Scotland and then compete. I asked Tanya about her choice to go straight for the non stop I enjoy ultra events and as this has been on my list for a while I thought why not? The conditions on the Friday started benign with flat water and just small bumps through the first lochs but with a building wind by the time Tanya was on Loch Ness the waves had grown (more later!) How was it? Well, I saw that there were big waves in the middle of the Loch, and so I thought I would hug the north shore. This was good until I needed to cross to the exit, where the chop became difficult, and I fell once. When I got to the finish though (after a gentle canal section), I felt great and that I could go on and do another one! I recommend anyone interested pop over to the Great Glen challenge Facebook pages and check out Alison Rennies amazing video of Tanya in action: https://www.facebook.com/720518212/videos/a.10162842870453213/630980226544875Tanyas time was extraordinary, 11 hours 5 minutes 45 seconds, smashing the womens record, beating all the other competitors, and providing huge inspiration (not least for the wonderful video captured by Alison of her surfing down Loch Ness). Mum Moya was thrilled to be at the finish and received a special supporters award. However, her excitement to capture Tanyas arrival led her to step back off the pontoon into the water! (something Emma H had done in previous years, so a deserved special medal). Moya is a stalwart of the International SUP scene and a regular volunteer at the 11 cities in the Netherlands.Another new International competitor needs little introduction: John Knippers, winner of the Last Paddler standing and the first SUP paddler to complete the Alabama 650, MR 340, and numerous other ultra ultra events. He also took part in the non-stop, I fell in say 12 times, my hands were white with cold, and I had to paddle on my knees for a while, this race is cool but hard, this dinner is a real celebration of people living life to the full. John came in third, followed by Peter Ellis in second place, and legend Paul Drake in first place among males. In total, just eight paddlers completed the non-stop, several having to retire on the sides of Ness. Here, the trackers, mandatory mobile phones and rescue boats all came into play. In the briefing, several safe exit points were shown, and quickly the Paddle Challenge Team collected those who (I am sure) are going to come back again.Emily King was the second female to finish again with an incredible time, I love the atmosphere of this, its like the old days of racing, everyone knows each other or quickly becomes the best friend of everyone else. It was my first time, and it felt like an empowering moment; you are in control of your route, decisions and destiny. I couldnt think about anything except the shape of the water and the wave sets. I looked up at one point and was amazed to see a tourist boat in front of me. The horizons are vast, with incredible scenery, but they also feel small, as you need to concentrate on the waves. My SUP surfing really helps. Would you do it again? Yes, definitely, but maybe biannually, I would like to try some other ultra events, maybe 11 cities next year. Two dayersThe first day started in Fort William, around 30 minutes after the non-stoppers departed. The large field was divided into ISUP and Hardboard classes with separate starts.Again, Michael Barron, a US Competitor, provided a spectacular result, impressing everyone with the speed and determination to paddle hard. I must admit some trepidation having suggested this race to him. Suggesting a holiday in Scotland comes with some risk from the vagaries of the weather, and the views and conditions may not be the best. This was my first time in Scotland and I have had more fun than anyone, its stunning: day 1 was about mountains and waterfalls, perfect paddling on canals and a couple of Lochs. It was great coming into Fort Augustus at the finish and meeting everyone. This is such a friendly event. Day two, swans and Castles, its a fairy tale. Mike benefited from the decision to reverse the direction for day two with a paddle from Inverness back to Fort Augustus. Everyone was so helpful, sorting logistics, board transport and stuff. The water was definitely flatter than Friday, but we still had great swell for the finish.I must admit to being slightly confused. I knew Jonny (Chainsaw) Stableford was ahead of me, enjoying the switch from an ISUP to hardboard, and he came in second, but another competitor was also there? Turned out to be a guy on a 17-foot unlimited board, so not technically in the 14-foot race. Also ahead is the first team of Andy Burrows and Niall Colquohan.Andy, who lives between Scotland and Spain, paddled the event in wellies. (Mike Barron asked him if this was traditional Scottish paddle wear, along with Dave Stransky famously rocking his kilt) Andy, I get cold feet and wasnt sure what to expect, I only normally paddle 20km events, so this was a new distance for me, I got cramp as well, so lots of lessons learnt between days one and two. At the prize giving, he shared a Billy Connolly skit on wellies, much to the befuddlement of an international audience! Niall and he worked as a pair, drafting each other up the canals and on the smaller Lochs. They turned in a good time to win the inaugural team event, taking a big salver home. So, by some misadventure, despite being behind Mike, Johnny, and the team, and another random paddler, I managed a third place. What does it feel like? Well, wonderful to finish, but the most important part is to enter. Once you are on the start line, youre surrounded by a tremendous camaraderie and support; everyone is there just to do it. The special camaraderie of Ultra competitors is particularly unique and perhaps just a bit addictive. The WhatsApp chat was full of mutual support and encouragement. For some posts about their retirements, it was all about what to do differently to come back and kick Nessies butt next time.In the ISUPS, the first male inflatable (standing joke from the awards) was Rory Press Worth. Rory, just 17 and in the upper 6th at school, is passionate about marine conservation. He recently paddled from Ireland to Scotland to raise funds for a marine conservation charity. He competed at the Great Glen two years ago at the age of 15 and loved it. This year, he was back racing on his Red Elite SUP. Everyone was impressed by his technique, Mike Barron noting, He was generating so much power I could see the flex in his paddle. Rory smashed the inflatable category with a total time under 13 hours, bringing in the awards for Northern Ireland. I asked why inflatable, Because I am young and cant afford a hardboard. Manufacturers take note, this is one very promising paddler!Carla Stipes, also from Ireland, had travelled over with the team, collecting paddlers from north and South. She was successfully defending her title from last year and summed up the event beautifully, What an honour it is to come back and retain my title. This race is unlike anything you could ever imagine. The location is picturesque yet terrifying, the weather swings from torrential downpours and waves like the North Sea to burning sun (literally!). The route takes you through twists and turns of canals, to Lochs that you cant physically see the end of when you start. You could spend hours alone, barely able to see any other paddlers, and then be side by side with a competitor, pushing to stay ahead. You have to prepare for everything, but no matter how prepared you are, Loch Ness can decide its not your day, and there is little you can do to control that. The ultimate challenge, physically, mentally and logistically. I cant say I enjoy every second of this race, but I think that makes completing it even more satisfying the iconic finishers coaster means almost as much as the trophy!John Knippers Partner Meral (celebrating her birthday on the Saturday) pushed for a close second, and Marlies Mendel (AUS) came in third. In the ISUP female category, Lucy Pearce (SUP North) powered to victory.Every competitor, challenger, volunteer, and supporter was a winner. The event this year seemed particularly inclusive and cohesive. It was great to see Alison Rennie and Allistair Swinco support the paddlers. They had loaned boards to John and Meral, hoisted boards out at the finish for tired paddlers, and generally led the great international party at the end with hugs, stories, pictures, and congratulations to all. Their images capture the event thanks to them and the volunteers for all the captured moments (check out the great glen socials!).The spirit of the event is perhaps summed up by random moments: Tanya driving to the party stopped at the roadside to offer me a lift, then Marlies popped into the shop to buy me a beer!. I could have talked to John Knippers forever (I am sure between us we could put the world to rights!) finally, a huge thank you to Duncan and Emma. Im sure they were aware of a few tears welling up as the emotion of completing this extraordinary event started creeping into everyones minds. Would I recommend it? Yes, no doubts, just get to the start line and everyone will help get you to the finish!Links: https://greatglenpaddlechallenge.com/https://www.facebook.com/greatglenpaddlechallenge

    NIK BAKER: BOARD TALK
NIK BAKER: BOARD TALKNIK BAKER: BOARD TALKThe 2026 Duotone wave range has landednew boards, new sails, new factory and a new shaper. We hear from Nik Baker who tells us what has changed, the background behind these updates and why these boards and sails feel like a huge step forward!Photos: Eunice Bergin and Billy ShortBEHIND THE DESIGNSNik Baker: I have actually had the new Ultra Grip and the Grip now for a couple of months already. So far, Ive managed to get out on them about 7-8 times in different and quite varied conditions, which is very useful for us, so I can get a feel for them. The boards are new designs because weve got a different shaper, which is now Kai Hopf. As you know, he has been our sail designer with Duotone and previously North forever. Kais been a mate of mine and made my sails for many years. He is a very talented, clever guy and quite a unique character as lots of these designers often are.Kai was also a very good windsurfer. He used to develop his own products; both boards and sails for years and years. He always made my fins, you know, the square tip wave fins! What we didnt even realize until, maybe eight months ago, was that Victor and the other team guys have all been riding Kais boards for the past few seasons. So, theyve been developing this new range for a long time. And then since the move from Fanatic to Duotone with the windsurfing boards and then Raoul taking over the brand management for not just the sail side of it, but also for the board sideThat was sort of the perfect timing make this new change in production with Kais designs.NEXT-LEVEL PRODUCTIONWe also have the incredible improvement for our products with the new Duotone board factory in Thailand, where all our boards are now CNC milled and custom built, including the entry level Eagles. The things that we are able to do with our factoryno one else cancertainly not at our capacity! So, we are in my opinion, light years ahead with the technology. This has allowed us to use different shapes and different technologies, but also whats just been launched for this year is our new MTO Made to Order products. So, you know, weve put all these elements together, with tried and tested, designs and setups, and then you can sort of pick and choose from those to build your own so-called custom board, which is pretty coolno other major brand can do that! It makes Duotone quite unique!THE ULTRA_GRIP: PURE WAVE WEAPONI have tried the new Ultra_Grip, which is the extreme radical performance-based wave board, so designed for proper waves. It is for better riders, proper wave guys that are into full on down the line or proper conditions. They are butter smooth through the chop, which is lovely for you because we have got really choppy conditions on the south coast. But the biggest change is the way they turn. The way they turn on a rail is like they are riding through butter. But its really a rail turn, its not just a little snappy turn, its a full-on proper grind that rail, turn it and it grips, it runs through the chop like it is flat water. It has taken me a little bit of time to get my sailing style slightly changed from the older designs that we are used tohaving to control them through the bottom and then snap off the top. On the new boards you drive through the bottom, use that speed, engage the rail and they sort of catch you by surprise when you get that rail engagedit grips so hard. I said to somebody the other day, I said, if I had these 20 years ago, I would have been multiple wave world champion! As long as long as nobody else had them, of course! So yeah, thats the Ultra_Grip, which you can get with 3 or 4 fins. Ive actually got it in both. Im undecided, if I like it better in 3 or 4, I think 4, but actually on the recent windy days, Ive been riding and loving the 82L with the 3 fins, so it really depends on the feel that you like.THE GRIP: CONFIDENCE AND FUNThen we have the Grip, which is more, I would say, a south coast type board. So if you are sailing like Timo Mullen down the line in Gwithian or Ireland, where theres a proper wave. Then you would probably be an Ultra_Grip customer. But the majority of the people in the UK, I would suggest would probably be more Grip customers. The boards feel slightly bigger compared to the Ultra_Grip. Theyre not necessarily a bigger boardeven in similar volumes the tails are a little bit wider, they get planning slightly earlier and they go upwind just a little bit easier! They give you more confidence! These boards are for a normal intermediate wave guy that are not into full on, down the line. They allow you to get planing and they give you that platform to practice your wave riding, have the confidence to jump because youre not worried about not getting back to the beach and not getting planing through the white water and stuff. The new Grip really gives you a lot of confidence when you are sailing. I sort of struggled with the Grip_3 last year. I felt it wasnt turning enough. The new boards have a lot more drive through the turn and are much snappier. I think they are an amazing board for the south coast conditions. For the proper waves and for proper turns, the Ultra_Grip is like nothing Ive ever ridden before!ULTRA_GRIP VS GRIP: SIDE-BY-SIDEI sailed 88L Ultra_Grip last night in south coast conditions and I had fun. Tim Frampton was on the 91 Grip 3 and it was 4.7m planing conditions and he was having a blast. Then the wind sort of dropped right off went a bit side, side / off so a bit drifting and riding. So that was good to test the boards also. The day before was, I was on a 4.2m and could have been on 3.7m, cross / cross-on at Sea Lane caf. I was on the Ultra-Grip with the 3 fins. Ive got the 82L and I was absolutely loving it. But then I know how to turn on a rail and I have a certain feel that I want. I want that engagement through the rail and that carve off the top. So, if youre a pretty good rider, then youll make the most out of, but to make the most of the conditions you would be better off on a Grip. So, if you are an above average intermediate wave guy, that is properly wave riding, then they will be able to extract the best out of the Ultra_Grip and make the most of it. If youre not at that point, then the Grip will flatter your wave riding better.FIRST SESSIONS FEEDBACKOverall, Im bloody loving the new boards! Ive been riding them with Sam Latham from Worthing Watersports, whos a pretty confident wave sailor as well. Weve been swapping boards backwards and forwards. It took us a couple of sessions to get our head around, slightly adjusting how we ridebut weve been bloody loving them! And Tim, whos actually my intermediate wave guy, whos just sort of learning to wave ride and hes quite heavy on his back foot and needs that confidence sort of given to him. He can ride an Ultra_Grip backwards and forwards and do his little bits, but actually the Grip just suddenly compliments him and gives him that confidence to want to push and learn a wave ride or to do a jump. He is staying up wind on the Grip no problem!I think for our short period of time, that weve been on them, the new boards seem pretty rad. You have to ride them a bit differently! I think the downside to the Ultra_Grip if there is one is if the wave is flat and quite soft, then youre not going to get the most out of the board. You need a bit of power, a wave that is a little bit steeper, so that you can use and that rail, engage that rail and use the drive that that rail gives you.DUOTONE Surfboards Your surfboard for every session!SAILSSUPER_HERO D/LABThe Duotone wave sails are all new this year. Weve got the Super_Hero D/Lab with all the glued seams, carbon panels and stretch patches which I use, these sails are insane. The wind range on the D/LAB is honestly something like 3 or 4 knots more bottom end power and at least 5 knots, if not more top end control. I dont know how Kais done it, but when its 3.7m weather like it was two nights ago, it didnt seem as windy on the beach. So I took a 4.2m as I dont like to be underpowered in those conditions, and it was absolutely 3.7m weather. Yet, I was on a 4.2m and it just made it feel like it was 4.2m weather. People were on 3.4m and 3.6m sails being blown off the water. So yeah, the sort of wind range that the new sail gives us is insane.SUPER_HERO SLSThen weve got a new Super_Hero SLS and its actually the same weight as a Super_Hero Dlab. It still comes with a 5-year warranty, but it feels so much lighter on the water and the wind range has also increased quite significantly compared to last year. So somehow Kais managed to reduce the weight but also give us that slightly bigger wind range. Some places it is not such an issue. I think for England where the wind, we get is more like16 to 30 knots generally every time we go rather than 20-25 knots, so that having that wind range is really important for me. On the South it makes such a difference for your general overall performance and fun that you get to have for your hour or two on the water. The guys have done a really good job of that.So super light, bigger wind range and the fact that the SLS Super_Hero, now the standard sail is as light as the D/Lab, is quite impressive. It is the biggest jump weve had for quite a long time in that way!DUOTONE Surfboards Your surfboard for every session!Worthing Watersports Duotone Specialist Store Wing Foil, KitesurfingH20 Sports watersports mega storeThe post NIK BAKER: BOARD TALK appeared first on Windsurf Magazine.

    WINDSURF SYLT PREDICTIONS
WINDSURF SYLT PREDICTIONSWINDSURF SYLT PREDICTIONSIts that time againSylt is about to serve up its annual cocktail of chaos, drama and North Sea madness. One minute its blowing 50 knots, the next youre running for cover as the heavens openbut somehow the best in the world still make it look easy. Titles are on the line, reputations are at stake and the forecast is keeping us all guessing. Perfect! So, it has been tough deciding who is going to shine and who is going to creep in under the radar, but here are our picks for the podiums!Photos: PWA / Carter, PWA / Rafa Soulart, PWA / Inna Bru and Tom de BrentBefore putting a dampener on this legendary North Sea showdownhas anyone taken a proper look at the forecast? Yesterday it looked like a relatively calm week, but then bamthis mornings update shows the second weekend could be nuking! Let us hope that forecast holds!! If theres one thing Europe in autumn teaches us, its to expect the unexpected.so we will remain optimistic and keep our eyes on the weather maps!Lets start with Foil Slalom as that looks like the most probable discipline that will get the ball rolling on the current forecast. The action will hopefully kick off at the weekend, which currently looks like those pesky side offshore easterly winds. That means offshore racing and equipment choice will be paramount.FOIL SLALOMMen1: Matteo Iachino2: Johan Soe3 Pierre MortefonMatteo IachinoWere taking a bold call and backing the 35-year-old Italian to claim victory in Germany this year. After dominating the foil slalom in Guadeloupe, Matteo looks like he may have an equipment edge this season. While he wasnt quite as sharp on the fin slalom gear in the Canaries, his foil setup seemed to be absolutely flying in the Caribbean. Add in his vast experience and you can be sure hell arrive in Sylt fully prepared for every eventuality. Its a risk to go against Soe, but here at Windsurf Towers we dont mind putting our reputation on the line.Johan SoeJohan is certain to be in the mix and could easily dominate in Sylt on his full Patrik setup. Hes spent much of this season focused on iQFOiL racing, so hell need to quickly get back into the groove of PWA Foil Slalom. That said, he was on fire in Sylt last year, hes used to the cold North Sea waters, and The Beast is no doubt fitter and stronger than ever. Expect him to be right in the mixif not on top of the podium.Pierre MortefonPierre is without doubt one of the best racers in the world, so leaving him out of the predictions is impossible. After dominating fin racing in the Canary Islands, hell be hungry to win both disciplines and secure the foil slalom crown as well. Hes already adapted impressively to the NeilPryde sails on fin and could well be even faster on the foil, especially when pairing up with his FMX race boards. Expect Pierre to be in the fight for the podium, and very likely pushing for the win.WILD CARD Maciek RutkowskiFresh off his Baltic Mission, Maciek arrives in Sylt either supercharged or running on fumes after such a demanding crossing. With his eyes firmly on another world title, Yentel will be tough to stop in Germany. Without doubt one of the most talented freestyle sailors on the planet, hes always hungry for victory.Lennart NeubauerThe good news for Lennart is that he looks back to full fitness after a solid month of training in Brazil. Already spotted on the ferry to Sylt, hes clearly giving himself time to adapt to the colder water and tricky North Sea conditions. His 5th-place finish in Fuerteventura leaves him a mountain to climb and reclaiming the title wont be easybut if the draw goes his way, Lennart could well fight his way back to the top.Jacopo TestaJacopo has been on fire this season and currently sits 2nd in the rankings after Fuerteventura. That puts him in a strong position to snatch the title if things align in Germany. With Sylt always unpredictable, a single elimination is possiblemeaning one shot to deliver. And Jacopo is more than capable of turning that chance into a world title upset. Dont count him out.WILD CARD Takumi MoriyaA special mention for young Takumi Moriya from Japan, who stunned the field with a 4th-place finish in Fuerteventura. With powerful doubles, clean backside and frontside riding and a proven ability to perform under pressure, Victor remains one of the hardest sailors to beat. Currently sitting 4th overall, hell be hungry to fight his way back onto the podium. The veteran just keeps delivering.WILD CARD Philip KsterIf the North Sea delivers wild, windy conditions, Philip instantly becomes a favourite for the win in Sylt. But if the conditions are marginal, it may be trickier for him to unleash his full arsenal of monster moves. Still, with the world title still within reach if he finishes the season strong, you can never count Philip out.WOMEN1: Sarah Quita Offringa2: Sol Degriek3: Pauline KatzWave WomenSarah-Quita OffringaFresh from training in Jericoacoara, Brazil, Sarah-Quita comes to Sylt with hours of water time under her belt. She has all the moves, all the experience and the mindset to win here. With the current forecast looking uncertain, she may not get the conditions to unleash her best. But if the North Sea switches on, Lina has the talent and determination to go all the way.
