    MARCILIO BROWNE: TWEAKED AIR TIPS
MARCILIO BROWNE: TWEAKED AIR TIPSMARCILIO BROWNE: TWEAKED AIR TIPSThere is no doubt that Marcilio Browne is the master of explosive tweaked airs; so we asked him to break down what it takes to land one of the most technical and rewarding moves in windsurfing. From picking the right section, to perfecting timing and body control, Marcilio shares key insights that might one day help you emulate the master of this move!Photos: Fish Bowl Diaries / WWT/ GoyaWS: What are the key conditions to try a mega tweaked aerial?MB: Ideally, I would go for a tweaked air in side shore winds, with head to double over head bowly sections!WS: Is the decision always spontaneous as the wave in front of you dictates or do you get on a wave and decide that you are going to going to bust one out no matter what?MB: The best ones always come out better when its spontaneous and you just let the wave call it. The ones that are planned usually end up looking a bit more forced and not as fluid. So, they are not a move that I would necessarily go out and try all day. You have to be patient and wait for the right moment before you pull the trigger!WS: What sort of section are you looking for?MB: I am looking for a wave that is bowly and powerful! I need a section that has the power to project me forward enough to execute the tweak and then nail the landing. I am usually looking just forward and than I switch to where I am going to land towards the end of the move. What about speed on the wave is this key?MB: You dont actually have to be going super fast when you go for a tweaked air. The projection usually comes from the wave section you hit. Angles and timing are everything!WS: At what point do you initiate the tweaked airand are there any changes to your set up as you do this?MB: As soon as the board leaves the wave you can pretty much start throwing the tail! You want to approach the lip way more vertical than a regular aerial! I always try to have a proper bottom turn into it. Iusually i just keep my hands wide, same as they were on the bottom turn, instead of bringing them together like in a regular top turn. How do you get the sail just right and keep pressure in the sail so you dont get back winded?MB: Just by making sure that the movement is coming from legs and hips and not the whole rig turning into the wind. The right position to be in, is by having the front arm more stretched and the back arm bent! How do you know when you have time to throw that extra tweak on some of them?MB: With time and repetition you start getting that sense of how far you can push the tweak. You can pretty much anticipate based on the size of the wave and speed you are coming with. The only way to really know this is a lot of attempts, trial and error! What percentage do you land?MB: Once you get the technique you can land high percentage. The trick is not so much landing, but how much did you tweak it and what angles did you come from. How hard is it to get that board back into a landing position when you are totally inverted in the air?MB: It is a very physical move I would say. To get all the way there you kind of need loose hips and back and to bring it back you need that core strength and strong flexible hamstrings. Being fit for sure helps as it is a very explosive move. Alot of the time the landings happen on flat sections, so making the landing really comes down to absorbing the impact by bending the knees and using core strength. How important is the timing on the initiation and exit strategy on a tweaked air?MB: Timing is critical pretty much 50% is about the timing I would say.If you dont hit the wave late enough; you might still make it back in, but it wont look as tweaked for sure. And if you wait too long to bring it back, you might be landing on top of your gear which can be nasty. So yes, timing is huge!Does the right equipment help? For sure. You want a board that you can trust when committed to a bottom turn on a heavier wave and a rig that is light and responsive, so you can move it around quick a light board also really helps! What tips would you give somebody who wants to start tweaking airs?MB: I would say to start slow and take learning the tweaked air step by step. Try to make small increments and slowly get your timing more and more vertical going into the lip. At first just worry about getting it tweaked even if landing behind the wave. Remember to open that front knee, that helps! Opening the front kneeallows the hips to turn further, giving room for the back leg to tweak more. How important is flexibility?Very important, as you will be stretching your hips lower back and hamstrings as far as they goWould you risk an extreme tweaked air in a contest final?MB: Depending on the location and conditions yes. But usually in a final you have got to use every move you have so yesI would for sure risk it!What is the fun factor on nailing one?MB: They are so fun and rewarding, especially when your timing is spot on and you get that extra tweak and a soft landing! And what are the things that can go wrong?MB: When it is too off shore, the tweaked air is kind of dangerous as you can get hit by the wind on the wrong side of the sail! Some pretty sick tweaked airs in this video! The post MARCILIO BROWNE: TWEAKED AIR TIPS appeared first on Windsurf Magazine.

The essentials we need before we dive deeper into goal setting in the next issue. These foundational steps will help you paddle comfortably and efficiently from the start.Boat Outfitting Is Your Gear Working for You?Tip: Before you get on the water, take a good look at your kayak outfitting. Is everything adjusted for your body? Pay special attention to your footplate position, hip pads, and trim. Proper outfitting is crucial for your comfort and performance on the water. Why it works: A correctly fitted kayak improves your control and comfort. If your trim is off, your footplate isnt correctly positioned, or your backrest is ratcheted up too tight, it can affect your paddling, making it harder to perform key skills like edging, boofing, and rolling. What to check: Make sure your footplate allows your legs to engage properly, that your hip pads give a secure connection to your boat, that your knees/thighs are correctly engaged and that youre not too low or too high in your seat. A small adjustment here can make a big difference.Paddle Dexterity Get Comfortable Moving Your PaddleTip: Improve your paddle dexterity the ability to manoeuvre smoothly and quickly through the water. Whether preparing for a roll, carving into an eddy, or setting up for a boof, having precise control over your blade is essential. Why it works: Developing a good paddle technique and getting a feel for the paddles feather improves your control in whitewater. The better you can move your blade efficiently and instinctively, the easier it is to react rapidly and place your strokes exactly where needed. Increased paddle dexterity will boost your confidence and help you handle challenging situations more effectively. How to practice: Spend time on the water refining your forward and reverse strokes while also incorporating techniques like slicing your blade through the water. Practising skills suchas the hanging draw, stern squeeze, and sculling draw will enhance your paddle dexterity. Focus on fluidity and precision, and work on transitioning smoothly between strokes to develop greater control and adaptability.Posture Keep Your Core Strong and AlignedTip: Focus on maintaining a strong and balanced posture in the boat. Sit up tall, engage your core, and keep your shoulders back to stay aligned. Why it works: Proper posture helps with boat control, balance, and stroke efficiency. It allows you to transfer power through your body to the paddle and react to the water without straining your back or neck. How to practice: While paddling, check in with your posture. Are you slouching or leaning too far forward? Keep your chest open and your hips engaged. When not paddling, practice sitting in a strong posture to develop the muscle memory needed to maintain it on the river.Practice Makes Progress Stay ConsistentTip: Keep paddling consistently! Progress in whitewater kayaking comes from continuous practice, even when the conditions arent perfect. Consistency is key to improving whether paddling on a river or working on flatwater drills. Why it works: Whitewater skills build over time; the more you practice, the faster your muscle memory develops. Consistent practice helps you stay comfortable in the boat and react quickly in new situations. How to practice: Set aside regular time to get on the water, work on specific skills, and challenge yourself in new ways. Flatwater training or dryland drills can help keep you sharp and improve your paddling fitness even if you dont have access to whitewater. Consistency is key; its why we run monthly whitewater coaching weekends!ConclusionNow that youve got some foundational tips to work with, its time to get out there and start building your skills. Whether improving your outfitting, honing your paddle dexterity, or refining your posture, these small steps will make a huge difference in your progression. If youre looking to take your skills to the next level, London Kayak School is here to supportyou every step of the way with expert coaching and guidance. Were excited to help you enjoy your journey and develop into a smoother, stronger, confident paddler.

THOMAS TRAVERSA: MAUI SUNSET SESSIONTHOMAS TRAVERSA: MAUI SUNSET SESSIONThomas Traversa reflects on one particular late session on Maui, where he scored wave after wave all to himself! Sailing uncrowded Hookipa is pretty rare these days, especially just after the Aloha Classic when there are plenty of sailors in town! Check it out!Thomas Traversa: Every day on the water is a special day, but some days are even more special. After the 2024 Aloha Classic was completed, I was fortunate enough to score an incredible sunset session at Hookipa, sailing until dark, with no one else out. the kind of moments that remind me why I am windsurfing. Later on that trip I had some more time on the water , enjoying every kind of conditions, before going back to Europe and get ready to chase some big winter conditions that I will share in the next videos! Watch the CI Team rip our new Better Everyday model
When this new models predecessor (Happy Everyday) debuted a few years agoafter placing 2nd in Stab in the Dark with Taj Burrowit quickly became a favorite and we eventually found ourselves wondering: How can we ride this even more? Thankfully, Britt and team went to work and those refinements resulted in the Better Everyday!Keeping all the characteristics that made Happy Everyday a great stepdown performance board, Britt made several notable updates to help it ride even Better. He relaxed its trademark hip; added a swallow tail; increased the tail rocker; and put an emphasis on riding it as a quad while making sure the 5-fin placement still worked great as a tri.The relaxed hip allows the Better Everyday to feel smoother through both the transitions and critical turns, and also opens its range in slightly larger waves. The swallow tail provides more bite and hold but still maintains the looseness the original design was known for. Increased flip out the tail on the Better Everyday loosens up the board, creating a positive feel out of the top while the decreased hip provides a more positive feeling off the bottom. The Better Everyday comes stock with five fin boxes, allowing you to choose what feeling you are after underfoot. Designed as a quad originally for experiencing an extra gear through the flats, Britt also created a special quad set to perfectly compliment the boards characteristics. The fin set combines more upright front fins and raked back fins that give the board the zing and hold to go to the next level. The Better Everyday is a great all-around design that sits right between your high performance shortboard (Two Happy/CI 2.Pro) and a step down/groveler (Rocket Wide/Happy Everyday). Simply put, the Better Everyday is designed for high performance surfing on the majority of waves the most of us surf every day!See and learn more about Better Everyday at your local surf shop or here
