SEVERNE PYRO 87L: 2025 TEST REVIEW
SEVERNE PYRO 87L: 2025 TEST REVIEWSEVERNE PYRO 87L: 2025 TEST REVIEWTHE VERDICTThe Severne Pyro is a full power machine that delivers speed on tap, while its ease of use will naturally put you where you need to be. Consider how you power the Pryo to allow it to shine on a wave, but it will still deliver fast, punchy, full send riding, trust me.THE LOWDOWNCovered in a lustrous red, the Pyro almost glistens in the sunlight. Its smart, but also a little sexy, with its carefully selected colour scheme. As wave boards go, the Pyro doesnt look intimidating, or overly aggressive in shape; its outline is parallel, and the volume is distributed in a welcoming manner, especially in the tail. Taking this into account, the Pyro should provide a comfortable and stable board when off the plane, as well as being user-friendly. Its wider tail outline, combined with the fish tail and volume, should make the Pyro excel at sneaking into waves early helping us to up our all-important wave count. When rolling the Pyro over to inspect the hull shape, a single concave transitions into a double concave to V, which should keep the Pyro fast in a straight line and quick to plane. The board has plenty of fin options and can be ridden as a quad, which is how we tested it, a thruster or a twin, which would really loosen up the Pyro. It comes equipped with Severnes NYCA fins, which is an injection-moulded technology blending thermoplastic and carbon fibres for enhanced abrasion resistance and rigidity for windsurfing. The rocker, like the outline, isnt overly aggressive, which helps maintain speed, which is no real surprise given that this is Philip Ksters signature model and he loves to fly high, boost massive airs and lay the board on its rail.BRAND CLAIMThe Pyro is fast, powerful, and versatile; sail it like Kster with twin fins for playful looseness. In a contest scenario, the improved early planing and better upwind ability of the thruster fin setup is the go. And then when the waves turn on, plug in the quad fins for down-the-line grip and reliability.PERFORMANCEFeeling stable with its even volume distribution, the Pyro works wonders as you float through messy waters before you find the ideal moment to release and slip it onto the plane. Accelerating to its top speed in an instant, it becomes blindingly obvious that the Pyro is an absolute rocket, so much so, that fast is an understatement it should almost come with a warning. The Pyro allows you to pick and choose your line with ease, and while it remains locked in in the tail, it still feels nimble and reactive underfoot. Firing through white water and reformed waves, and once fully comfortable with its lightning pace, the Pyro encourages a real send it attitude as you look for ramps to launch you high into the air. Its wonderfully efficient upwind angles make it easy to get off the beach in onshore conditions, while in more favourable conditions, youre almost guaranteed to be the first to get back into prime position for the next wave, as its speed and impressive upwind angles work together in perfect harmony. The Pyros natural speed, paired with its forgiving volume distribution and outline, mean that transitions are a breeze. Meanwhile, the Pyro will do everything in its power to help you out of critical situations. On a wave, dialling into the Pyro is essential, and due to its natural top speed, you may need to run off a little bit of that speed and let the power of the wave do most of the work for you as you drop down the face. If you do just that youll be greatly rewarded.Sailing overpowered requires precision and commitment. When bottom turning you need to commit and use the Pyros natural speed to your advantage. If you bank the Pyro over, youll be instantly rewarded with a seriously powerful bottom turn, possessing a controlled arc, allowing you to hit the lip with plenty of punch. Its speed can sometimes challenge its agility as well as the riders when trying to sharpen a turn, as it can feel very locked in, when setup as a quad at least, especially in bolt-onshore conditions, which requires the rider to really adapt and think about how much juice they supply the Pyro. Its natural speed, whether youre sailing perfectly powered or overpowered, lets you float over sections like a cloud to the next clean section, where you can carve out turns on its face. Suited to riders with a full-power attitude, youll need to give the Pyro as much of a send it attitude as it demands do that and you are in for the ride of your life.Website: www.severnesails.comSEVERNE PYRO 87L: 2025 TEST REVIEWVITAL STATSPrice: 2199Volume (Quoted): 87LLength: 222cmWidth: 59cmBottom Shape: Single Concave to Double Concave to vee at very end of the tailWeight: 7.15kg (Fins & Straps) 6.38kg (Naked)Fin: Quad x2 SV 14cm & x2 SV 11cmSail Range (Quoted): 4.2-5.7mSizes Available: 56, 62, 68, 74, 79, 83, 87, 93, 99, 105, 113OTHER BOARDS IN THIS TESTDuotone Grip 4 SLS 87LGoya Custom Quad 8 Pro Carbon 88L JP Australia Ultimate Wave S-Tec 87L Quatro Cube 6 86L Starboard Ultra Carbon Reflex 86LBACK TO TEST OVERVIEWThe post SEVERNE PYRO 87L: 2025 TEST REVIEW appeared first on Windsurf Magazine.

STARBOARD ULTRA 86L: 2025 TEST REVIEW
STARBOARD ULTRA 86L: 2025 TEST REVIEWSTARBOARD ULTRA 86L: 2025 TEST REVIEWTHE VERDICTProviding some comfort when powered, the Ultra looks for a proactive rider who can provide and drive power through it. The Ultra allows the rider to play the board with both the front and back foot while riding. Although the Ultra is happy in onshore conditions, its very wave-oriented outline would allow you to push it in some waves of consequence.THE LOWDOWNThe Ultra from Starboard stands out with its bold and classic design, making it instantly recognisable, even from a distance. Its brushed carbon blue transitions into a bright, clean red at the tail, which creates a bold and pleasing on the eye visual. The Ultra looks to be built for agility and speed, featuring a sleek outline that narrows at the tail for tight turns in the most critical sections of a wave. The thinned-out rails in the tail aim to provide exceptional grip and control through bottom turns, regardless of the intensity of the conditions. The domed deck encourages easy, positive rail-to-rail transitions, which enhances your manoeuvrability. The nose of the Ultra is distinctly lifted and pulled in, designed to keep you high and dry in choppy waters while offering control in steeper sections of the waves, even when conditions become challenging. The thruster setup should ensure a balanced combination of looseness, drive and control. The newly tuned rocker line, running from the mid-section to the tail, ensures early planing with minimal effort, while the Double Concave under the footpads enhances acceleration and smooths out choppy waters. The short mast track and fixed-position fins make the Ultra user-friendly, minimising the margin of error, while maximising the enjoyment of its technical design features.BRAND CLAIMDelivering ULTRA snappy off-the-top manoeuvres and smooth bottom turns, the innovative ULTRA concept thrives in real world wave conditions. Fast acceleration gets you quickly into the line-up, keeps you moving in critical sections and allows extra jumps on the way out.PERFORMANCEThe Ultra requires the rider to have a balanced approach to foot placement to keep it stable and drive it in the desired direction. The Ultra isnt a natural platform when floating off the plane, but once given enough power, it jumps onto the plane easily. In the straps, the Ultra feels stable and locked in, but demands a little more from the front foot. Its thruster setup provides decent drive and direction on all points of sail, and its pulled-in nose and substantial rocker naturally help avoid any unruly chop. Through gybes, the Ultra remains locked in and predictable, while during tacks, you need to stay close to the mastfoot to take full advantage of the volume distribution. The flat area around the mastfoot is a subtle feature, but youll really notice it in the tack as it adds comfort and stability during time-critical manoeuvres. Overall, the Ultra is a relatively fast board, carrying speed on the crest of a wave as you look down-the-line or a face to choose the perfect moment to drop. The initial drop into the first bottom turn and up to the top of a crumbling crest is where the Ultra truly comes to life for me. It thrives on power throughout the ride, allowing you to bank the board over and make use of its domed deck, while digging those chunky rails into the face as you enter a powered, but controlled bottom turn. At a moments notice you can tighten the turn with more back foot pressure to send the Ultra more vertically towards the crumbling, or pitching lip, which is perfect for a smack or snap off the top. The Ultra responds well to riding with power and proactiveness, especially in the lower half of your body, asking the rider to shift weight and power forward after hitting the top to bring you smoothly back down into the next section. The nose always avoids burying and sits comfortably in the curve of a wave. If you sail with power and intention, youll reap the many rewards the Ultra has to offer.WEBSITE: windsurf.star-board.comSTARBOARD ULTRA 86L: 2025 TEST REVIEWVITAL STATSPrice: 2549Volume (Quoted): 86LLength: 223cmWidth: 58.5cmBottom Shape: Vee Double Concave to Double Concave to Single Concave (nose to tail)Weight: 7.2kg (Fins & Straps) 6.36kg (NakedFin: Thruster x2 Stone Surf 11cm & x2 Stone Surf 19cmSail Range (Quoted): 3.5-5.5mSizes Available: 72, 78, 82, 86, 93, 100, 110OTHER BOARDS IN THIS TESTDuotone Grip 4 SLS 87LGoya Custom Quad 8 Pro Carbon 88L JP Australia Ultimate Wave S-Tec 87L Quatro Cube 6 86LSeverne Pyro 87LBACK TO TEST OVERVIEWThe post STARBOARD ULTRA 86L: 2025 TEST REVIEW appeared first on Windsurf Magazine.
